Use a Tripod

In product photography, one needs patience to get the perfect photo as it might take hours of moving lights and adjusting reflector cards. In this situation you cannot afford to shoot handheld as you would not get the same frame every time you shoot. This is the reason why you should use a steady tripod while shooting products so that you can work with the placement of lights and the light modifiers and simply click the shutter release button on the camera.

The size, shape and the position of light source makes or breaks a product photo. When we talk about the light source, it can be either continuous light, strobe light (flash) or a studio light. It is advisable not to mix two different types of light sources.

To achieve smooth and equally distributed lighting on the product, use a big light modifier such as a soft box or a sheet of butter-paper (parchment paper) placed in front of the light source. To achieve well-lit product photo, use two light sources, both placed opposite to each other and at an angle of 90 degrees to the left and right of the product.

If you only have a single light source, don't worry as using a reflector or a sheet of white paper can help you reflect back the light coming from the light source towards the product.

As you would be using a tripod to keep your camera stationary, and your subject would be fixed at one place too, it is better to switch your lens to manual focus mode. Manual focus would allow you to focus on the exact point without any error, thus giving your sharp output.

If you are happy using the auto focus mode, make sure you set your camera on spot metering in order to make your camera meter as per your focus point. This will give you perfectly exposed photo.

To keep it simple, all you need is a piece of paper big enough to cover your frame. the backdrop paper could either be white, black or any color you want, just make sure that your product does not get merged with the backdrop color. To build a quick setup simply use a table (horizontal) and arrange the backdrop paper in such a way that it flows from the wall to the end of the table, making sure that there are no folds in the paper to give it a seamless backdrop look.

Once you have mastered the basic product photography, you can play around with the background as well as the foreground elements.

For example, in the image below a piece of acrylic sheet has been placed under the subject to create reflection. Isn't this a great idea?

Have you heard of El Bokeh Wall? The image shown below is an example of the same. All you have to do is use a sheet of aluminium foil, crumple it and throw some light onit. To know more about El Bokeh Wall, click here

Shoot in RAW

While shooting in JPEG format, your image gets compressed and loses all the details and data and leaves you with a file which has very less editing capabilities. The RAW format is just the opposite, it retains all the data that your camera captures and does not lose any information or details from the image. So, whenever you shoot products, make sure to switch the image type to RAW format.
