I totally advise keeping a set of gels around. They’re a quick and effective way to add a smidgen of attention to a photo, change a background colour, or do something quite experimental, and they’re quite affordable. Since Bergman shows, however, there are a number of things that you need to consider to make certain you get punchy, lively colour from the gels. In particular, you have to pay very careful attention that nothing interferes with the colour or you risk it becoming washed out and ruining the effect.
